Region: Douro, Portugal | Varietal: Touriga Nacional | ABV: 20.0% | Price: $28
We are huge fans of a quality port and this is no exception. While this is something of a "mainstream" port in the USA, this port is well worth the price tag (around $60 USD).
The nose on this port is medium intensity and a bit subtle. The aromas are mixed, but reveal orange, spice, nuts, licorice, and some oakiness. What this tawny lacks on the nose it makes up for in the mouth. Wow! The blend of sweetness, tannin, acidity, and alcohol create a lattice for the plum, pomegranate, fig, raisin, burnt brown sugar, and jam flavors to float across your tongue with a lingering, long finish.
This bottle will keep nicely, but who would want to wait? This port needs no pairing and is the perfect complement to a nice fire on a cold winter night. If you are driven to have something with it, just go with a handful of candied pecans or an almond biscotti!
